Diesel Battery Charger Cooling Options

Ample Power Diesel Battery Chargers are installed in diverse settings. Those environments require different ways to cool the engine.

The smallest engine/alternator unit has a thermo siphon block and can be used with the radiator mounted on the top of block, or with a marine heat exchanger that replaces the radiator. The radiator is only effective in free air so mounting in a sound enclosure is not viable with the radiator.

Larger units use two and three cyclinder engines which have a coolant circulating pump. This allows a variety of cooling options. Units are therefore priced without a cooling apparatus.

Cooling options allow:

  1. none, to be supplied by customer, i.e keel cooling;
  2. attached radiator;
  3. remote radiator;
  4. marine heat exchanger;

Customer Supplied Cooling

Keel cooling is an effective method of cooling the engine, particularly when the engine will be operated for extended periods.

Using standard 22mm coolant hose the cooling device can be located ten feet from the engine.

One customer is using a large coolant tank that shares a wall with a buoy vessel. Temperature is monitored with engine shutdown as necessary.

One sailboat owner with modest electrical demand is using a similar method with a small internal tank.

Attached Radiator

An attached radiator with engine fan is typical for land based units mounted under a roof or in a well ventilated shed.

Remote Radiator

When a unit is mounted inside an encloure without sufficient ventilation then a remote radiator is suggested.

This radiator could be a large coolant tank, or an actual radiator with an electric fan. The threat of vandalism must be considered ...it's easier to protect a radiator/fan than an exposed tank.

Marine Heat Exchanger

A unit with a marine heat exchanger uses the normal engine pump to move coolant but also has a second pump suitable to pump salt water through the heat exchanger. The salt water is then pumped overboard, typically through the exhaust system.
